You want your child to eat well and we understand good nutrition is vital to your child's overall development and well-being. We believe that positive early experiences with food promotes healthy eating habits that will last a lifetime. We asked that you provide a healthy lunch for you child everyday that consist of a piece of fruit, protein, whole grain and vegetables try not to give your child juice.
Some ideas you can try with lunch is using a variety of breads such as; rye or multigrain loaves; pita bread bagels; lavash; or flour tortillas. Fill sandwiches with tuna salad, sunflower butter, cheese, hummus or vegetables. Cut the sandwiches into fun shapes using large cookie cutters. Try cutting up raw vegetables, such as carrots, celery, green peppers, broccoli, cauliflower and cucumbers. Send them with a small container of low-fat dip. Include a piece of fruit for dessert, washed and ready to eat, or a container of fruit salad. Try cubes of reduced-fat cheese or string cheese with whole-grain crackers. Few kids can resist yogurt, a good source of protein and calcium, which now comes in many different flavors and forms. Try to Avoid prepackaged, convenience foods, which tend to be high in fats, and especially those with saturated and trans fats. It is usually cheaper, healthier and smarter to make similar items with your own ingredients. Whatever your child does not eat we will wrap it up and bring back home so you know what they are eating.
We do provide two snacks one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Our snacks consist of milk, fruit/vegetable and a protein. Our meal times are planned so that no child will go more than three hours without being offered food. Scheduled meal times are 8:30-9:00, 11:30-12:00, and 3:00-3:30. If your child is absent during a scheduled meal or snack please plan to feed him/her before he/she arrives. Although fast food is convenient, please do not bring your child with a fast food meal or drink as this undermines efforts to teach healthy habits to the children.
Throughout the year the children will learn to explore food in new ways using all their senses. With our monthly culinary activity children will enjoy the value of cooking and develop hands on skills and techniques to be creative. Using fine motor skills, eye-hand coordination, cooperation and teamwork within a safe and controlled environment. As children practice counting, measuring, sequencing, problem-solving, reading and following step by step directions, early concepts of language, math and science are also emphasized.
Children love being involved with cooking and preparing food. Cooking is also a great way to engage children in learning and to create teachable moments at home while having some messy fun.
Birthdays are a significant part of a child’s social development and are special occasions at Kiddie Island Academy. On that day, your child will receive a birthday crown and a cupcake. You are more than welcome to bring non-food items as treats to share with their friends.
